Learning first aid in Leith

At St. Andrew’s First Aid, we are well known for the first aid training courses that we offer, but did you know that we have a very active volunteer company right here in Leith?

St. Andrew’s First Aid have a committed corps of volunteers who meet at the St. Andrew’s office in Dock Place, close to The Shore. We come from many different backgrounds, from office staff to mental health workers, scientists to IT staff… what brings us together is a passion for First Aid and a commitment to helping others. We generally meet a couple of times a month to undergo our training tailored to volunteering, and to keep our First Aid skills and knowledge up to a high standard. At Leith Company we have volunteers who have been with St. Andrew’s First Aid for over 40 years.

The Leith Team

Our volunteers are well known for their Events Cover which takes us to sporting and charity occasions, concerts, and a variety of other events throughout Leith and Edinburgh – and even across Scotland. In the last year our volunteers helped provide First Aid cover at events such as the European Championships in Glasgow, the Virgin Money Fireworks concert at the end of the Edinburgh Festival and football matches at Easter Road.

We also have volunteers who love to spread the word about what St. Andrews do through regular Demo Talks to schools, voluntary groups and also out and about training the public in CPR and emergency First Aid techniques. At Leith Company we also run a dedicated Cadet corps for young people aged 11 – 15 years. These committed youngsters work through a 15-hour course of lessons for their First Aid certificate, but many stay to further develop their First Aid skills, learn more about how they can contribute, and eventually go on to volunteer with the Adult Company. Through the years some of our Cadets have progressed to careers in the Scottish Ambulance and the NHS, proving that the skills learned through volunteering can take them onto exciting futures!

Volunteers tell us that they join St. Andrew’s First Aid for a number of reasons. As well as having a love for First Aid and the potential to save someone’s life, there are lots of benefits to volunteering – including learning new skills, getting out and about to lots of different events and meeting new people.

We are lucky to have caring and committed volunteers who love to get out helping others, and we are always interested in bringing in new members to Leith Company.
