Lunar Landings in Leith

Posted by to The Blog on September 21st

Saturday 29th September at Pilrig Church Hall is the next Neu! Reekie!…..but hear ye it’s not just any Neu! Reekie!, yon spry soirée is carrying the banner: Edinburgh and Copenhagen: When Comets Collide.

The show is a crescendo event to celebrate City Link Festival – this branch of which sees a run of happenings taking place between 24th and 27th September across Edinburgh: exhibitions, symposiums, live performances and much mare – the venues: a motely crew of Summerhall, The Biscuit Factory, Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Rodney Street Tunnel, Pilrig Church and beyond.

Pre-dating the Festival was a cultural exchange of ten or so bodies – the likes of pioneering rabble-rouser/provocateur Kevin Harman (famed for sticking poles through gallery windaes, opening an after hours absinth shebeen of centuries past and lifting doormats when you’re not looking); and Leith based painter/visual exorcist Rab Choudhry. Our Edina folk have already trekked over to Copenhagen and vice versus – their starlets came to us. What resulted was an artistic fornication of concepts, creations and colours, all this pouring out of some of Scotland and Denmark’s finest practitioners. This was/is a veritable pairing of cities mind, no a fictional twinning launched from an Agency signpost (that’s Leith to Rio) – that said, hats off tae that too – stupendous work.

Morvern Cunningham of Leith Late has being involved since the offset commenting: “The exchange started when the Scots went over to Copenhagen in April for a super-intensive weekend of getting to know the art spaces in the city and each other. Cue much cycling and boozing and black eyes (just one in fact, in a cycling and booze related incident). The Danes returned the compliment in June, where we started getting down to the nitty gritty of exploring each other’s practice and visiting the then brand new space of the Biscuit Factory as a location for the initial exhibition. We’re now a wee family and looking forward to hanging out again in September. The work produced and the artists will congregate once again for a Danish leg of the exhibition in Copenhagen at the end of October.”

Kevin Harman stated rather gnomically of his forthcoming live outing: “If I can be trusted to put my food through self service tills, then I can…” [more to come].

Anyhow, aye, the Comets Collide show will feature poetry, films, visuals and live performance; a gaggle of Danish artists alongside Scots of Neu! Reekie!’s carefully calamitous curation. Allied to Rab and Kevin’s live appearances, highlights include: Edinburgh punk poetry stalwart Rodney Relax; Danish Electronic whizz Lisa Alma (a Clash Magazine favouirte whom The Seattle Time’s labeled more a poet than a pop star); and our headline band – the illusive – Naked. In the past wee while, this ethereal pop troupe have signed to LuckyMe Records, made some London relocations, unshackled a couple of stunning videos and journeyed over to New York to record their debut album. Their re-arrival in Edinburgh promises something electronically effervescent, abstruse and astonishing – lasers, strobes, smoke machine = check. Oh and there’ll be Scottish/Danish scran whipped up by Alternative Roots – the new venture of brothers Owen and Rhys of that Emelle lot.

Got it? Good……now hurry along. Tak.
