Fashion, Food & Cultural Extravaganza

Posted by in November's Magazine

In August Edinburgh welcomed a stunning and most adequate addition to the festival venue circuit, Summerhall: a labyrinth of winding corridors and mysterious doorways whose previous guise had been the universityʼs Dick Veterinary School.

However no sooner had the award-winning theatre productions left the bone-weary laboratories and the glamorous parties vacated the green-tiled heights of the venueʼs Dissection Room, than the school was returned to the hands of Edinburgh University for further post-studious dismantling. Now, as December approaches, weʼre on the verge of embracing Summerhall as a permanent, and privately run, base for contemporary arts activity, located at the gateway to the cityʼs south side.

The first major event on Summerhallʼs new agenda is an all day fashion, food and arts market; a distinctly seasonal affair celebrating Scotlandʼs creative talent through catwalk shows, bespoke stalls, pop-up exhibits, poetry, live music plus all the festive trimmings. Itʼs a production from the Noir! team (who brought their ninth edition ‘A Tribute to Alexander McQueen’ to Summerhall mid-August) in aid of Home Start, the invaluable charitable organisation which trains volunteers in aiding young, in-need families through regular home visits.

Animal examining room
Fashion collaborators (so far) include Harris Tweed, Jane Davidson, Godiva Boutique, Belinda Robertson, Kakao by K, Odyssey Lingerie, Chouchou Couture, Joyce Paton, Shhh-ooh… the list continues. A selection of the brands will feature in the fashion shows and judging by the impressive styling, staging and industry associations of previous Noir! incarnations expect the cream of Scotlandʼs modelling talent to be put through their paces in the Main Hall too.
If you havenʼt frequented Summerhall before, either in its festival guise or through your animal-examining studies, there are intriguing architectural features that this dayʼs event will allow you to explore in the 1823-launched establishment. The Anatomy Lecture Room – complete with banked, wooden seated hemisphere – will host a series of spoken word, poetry and film presentations by the boisterous, avant-garde collective Neu Reekie!

Juicy looking bones
Meanwhile, enduring art and design ‘pop-uppers’ Go Reborn will be presenting artists (and their sellable wares) from their extensive creative network plus Zwart Creative Bureau promise a specially themed curation following on from their well-received hybrid creatures install, ‘(dis)ambiguationʼ, in the Dissection Room over August.

On the food front thereʼll be a feast of well know Scottish eateries making appearances for the day, either for you to gobble while you investigate the impressive surrounds or to hoard plentiful hamper gifts from for the impending holidays. Youʼll be well warned that any juicy looking bones spotted inside the Dissection Room’s cabinets may well be past their shelf-life!

Info: Saturday 10 Dec, 11-7pm, Summerhall, Edinburgh
