Leith Festival is fighting to survive. Having lost several income streams from local authority and charitable body funders in recent months, the Festival is now in danger of closing its doors for good.

For the last 8 years, Leith Festival has created a 10 day community arts festival, showcasing home grown artistic and musical talent, supporting local theatre and dance groups and providing a much needed economic boost to the Leith area. The highlight of the festival has always been the Leith Festival Pageant and Gala Day, held on the 2nd Saturday of June each year. With over 10,000 people attending, this event is an annual platform for local arts and businesses to showcase the vibrancy of the local community.  Although the wider festival has been going for 8 years, the Gala day and Pageant have been going for over 100 years and is a key date in the Leith community’s calendar.

Due to limited finances, the volunteer board have been forced to conclude that the 10 day community arts festival will have to be put on hold for 2012. We still hope to be able to put on the Leith Festival Gala Day on Saturday 9th June 2012, however it is unlikely that the Gala Day will go ahead without an injection of ideas, finance and local support. Since its inception the Gala Day has been the biggest annual public celebration of Leith’s vital spirit. In these difficult times, perhaps more than ever, we need to emulate Leith’s motto and ‘Persevere.’

The board are committed to saving the Festival and continuing to serve the local community through its work. However we are now calling for the people of Leith to come to our aid, we need ideas and support, investment, sponsorship, donations of time, money and resources and most of all we need the people of Leith to help us save their local community arts festival.

With the Leith population sitting at around 43,000 people, if everyone in Leith donated a penny the Festival would be able to continue its’ great work for years to come. Imagine what we could do if everyone donated £1.00…

We are holding a PUBLIC MEETING alongside our AGM at the Leith Community Centre on Wednesday 7th December 2011 at 7.30pm and hope that the people of Leith turn out to help save this fantastic community resource.

We would appreciate anyone who wants to come along to the meeting with ideas for fundraising, offers of support or investment  or anyone who thinks they might have a couple of hours a month to become part of the board of volunteers who run the Festival. We are specifically looking for people with experience in finance, governance and web design/social media but old-fashioned enthusiasm is just as valuable. Please email  if you want to help us save Leith Festival.

Details on how to join the association, sponsor the festival or simply make a donation can be found on our website
